24 Hours of Beauty

A few years ago my clients gave me a huge terracotta container of cacti in various stages of growth. I was instructed to keep the container in the full-sun, facing north. The cactus does not require watering, but sometimes my husband sprinkles water from our fish pond in the backyard of our Sun City Grand home.

Without warning, the cacti small nodules sprout a long arm, normally in the afternoon. The cactus blooms at night, a beautiful sight to awaken in the morning. I quickly get pictures since these beautiful flowers will last only 24 hours, only to shrivel and die the next day.

Each white flower has a purple petal skirt, with mini flowers on the anther.

Arizona deserts have beauty all its own. Cactus flowers are always exciting to watch, but don't get too close.

Collecting and watching the desert cactus can be peaceful, retirement lifestyle at its best. Living and working in Sun City Grand in Surprise has many benefits.
